What does "cryptographically signed" actually mean? +
When you capture, Sootru generates a unique cryptographic hash of the media and signs it with a key held in your phone's secure hardware chip. That signature is mathematically tied to the exact bytes of the file. Alter the media by even a pixel and the signature no longer matches, which is how anyone can tell it has been tampered with.
Does the signing happen on my device or in the cloud? +
On your device. The hash and signature are computed locally, inside the secure hardware chip, before the file is ever transmitted. Nothing has to be uploaded first for the proof to exist.
What is the Bitcoin blockchain doing here? +
Each signature is anchored to the Bitcoin blockchain, a permanent public ledger no single party controls. That gives every capture an independent, tamper-proof point in time, so the moment it was taken can be confirmed by anyone without trusting us.
Does it still verify after social media compresses my video? +
Yes. Verification is built to survive the re-compression that platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and WhatsApp apply, so a file shared and re-shared can still be confirmed as genuine.
Can someone strip out or fake the signature? +
A signature can be stripped out, but it cannot be forged, and altered media will not keep a matching one. A missing or broken signature is itself a signal: unsigned media makes no claim to authenticity, and tampered media fails verification.
